The Opposite of Love

Someone asked a group of us what we thought the opposite of love is. Hate, Selfishness, Rebellion, Apathy, and Fear all came up as possible answers. Good answers. Even some fairly interesting theology shuffling around in there. I prayed on it a bit and thought it over and after a while I decided perhaps LOVE [...]

An Unanswered Question?

Q. What makes you think Christianity is true?

A.Now comes the difficult part, as Chesterton said; to put all these things down. It would take a book that others have written(1), so I suggest you read those and I will say only this:
When one knows something so completely and believes it so fundamentally, it is more [...]

The Problem of Evil

Are the existence of God and the presence of evil mutually exclusive? Does the death and suffering we witness in the world around us every day somehow speak against God? In these posts I argue that not only is it possible for God to have a morally sound reason for allowing suffering, but without God evil could not even be said to exist.

Finding a Church

“Do you have any tips for finding a good church?”
Short Answer:
Well, there is only ONE church, as stated in the Apostles’ Creed, “sanctam Ecclesiam catholicam” or “the holy catholic church,” that is, eternal and universal. The gathering of the people of God throughout time and space. When you profess faith in Christ, as the Apostles’ [...]

The Shack

Is it heretical or even irreverent to represent The Creator God, The Father, as a woman?
It’s not that Young makes The Father figure of the Trinity into a black woman that reeks of blasphemy, but that he makes Him into anything at all. We create graven images when we do such; we must allow God [...]

Was Jesus Born on December 25th?

Question
Short answer: No.
Longer answer:  No. At least, probably not. We have an idea that He may have been born sometime in the late Spring or early Summer given the likely time of the census. But we really have no idea. A lawyer in the States using astronomy software probably (at least in my book) found [...]

Lukewarm

Someone asks, “What’s it mean, ‘But the lukewarm I will spit out of my mouth’?” By itself this statement has no certain meaning. Probably this is an allusion to Revelation 3:16Revelation 3:16English: Contemporary English Version (1999) – CEV16 But since you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spit you out of my [...]

What Good is Evil?

“Why it is necessary that we be able to choose evil for us to have free will, while it is not necessary that God be able to choose evil for Him to have free will?” was the actual question.
For starters, I must admit my limits and refer my readers (all one of me) to Lewis or Augustine, Bonhoeffer or Athanasius for a detailed answer. Dr. Craig is certainly well thought out, but I always like to think things through myself.

Short answer: Good is defined by who God is, His very nature. Evil is turning from or disobeying God, and as we are like but separate entities, we have that choice. A choice that God does not have. God cannot turn from Himself, though He may do as He pleases.

Dawkins, the mountain and the explosion

There’s a problem with evolution: it seems impossible, improbable, inexplicable. When one looks at the incredible complexity and diversity of life on this planet (and we can’t look elsewhere – as far as we know we are alone amongst the stars) it seems to be a stretch too far to believe that we all [...]

Homosexuality: nature or nurture? Part 1

In keeping with our theme of going Science Mad, and as a follow up to James’ post on homosexuality, I thought it might be good to examine this idea that homosexuality is a product of nature, a genetically determined behaviour, rather than a choice. But first – why are we doing this? Why [...]

The Big 10

Image via Wikipedia
I’d like to examine the best known (and possibly least adhered to) section of the Old Testament very quickly. We get about 3 or 4 hits a week from people looking for an explanation of the Ten Commandments “in layman’s terms.” I’m no lawyer, nor am I sure what it is exactly folks [...]

Why Was Jesus Killed?

We get a lot of questions and, personally, I think that rocks. One I just got was “Why was Jesus killed?” and in keeping with “layman’s terms” I’m gonna keep it simple and make it short. (I hear sniggering from the peanut gallery…)
Let’s break down the ‘why’ into three different categories: 1) Jewish Law, 2) [...]

Be Ye Warned

President Obama landed in Turkey earlier this week speaking urgently in his attempts to pull the US and Turkey back into a more friendly accord. What did he say? Well, this may prove controversial, angry and narrow-minded, so please forgive me – I am not attacking the president whose speaking skills only perhaps Reagan matched, [...]

Quick Thought on Evolution

This just passed through my head (as a lot does – mostly wind) in regards to Evolutionary Theory. Please let me know if anyone else you know of has thought of it previously or if there are flaws in my logic or if it is unclear, which I am positive it will be – this [...]

Of One Accord

Someone has asked

“In your kind response to my question, you mention concern for our souls … almost as if differences in doctrine preclude being saved. I am a member of a conservative Baptist chruch … though I’m not sure for how much longer. We practice ecclesiastical separation … one of the reasons I’m contemplating a [...]

More Questions

So this fella, Matt, a commentator on Lydia’s blog has posed these 10 questions in response to her 10. (Which are answered on her blog at the bottom)Here is what he wrote:I have ten questions too. No need to answer them if you don’t want to. They’re not really challenges as much as points of [...]

Miyuki’s Questions

Reference to Miyuki’s Question on Facebook:
Ah, this can get really deep here. You are asking questions that can be answered easily and naively, or that can be expounded into truths so profound as to change your very being.
1) When you hear “church” what do you think of?
“Church” in the sense that you have put [...]

Apologetics…

From JSI’m new to Bible study, and can’t offer much, but Catholic dogmas like the Papacy just don’t have Scripture to back them up. The same with the perpetual virginity of Mary, mass, and so on. Indeed Catholics twist select verses to ‘fit’ their views, and to make their lies believable they go [...]
